Crazy Grids

This week in numeracy we are learning to locate positions on a grid. As the weather was so lovely today, we decided to take our learning outside.

We used chalk to draw and label the grids on the playground and we also worked out how many squares they had by multiplying the columns by the rows.

We then drew a map and drew different objects in different positions.

We challenged each other to tell the position (grid reference) of each object and we gave refernces for people to go and stand on. It was gresat fun!

Our work will be there until it gets washed or rubbed away but here are some photos of what we did.

We had the Top Tops written on the playground!

To finish off our work, we were all given a grid reference to stand on on the big grid! We could all find our postion correctly!

What a wonderful week!

Year 3, including myself have had a fantastic International Arts Week. It was great to see so many children and parents in the hall after school on Friday. Here are some photos in case you missed anything!

If you are bored at home it would great to draw a picture of your own and colour it in using things you have found in your garden.

Happy hunting!!

Pasta

This morning the children cooked a traditional Italian Pasta dish.

They had to follow a recipe, use their cooking skills and think about food hygiene!

They children did very well and we have some budding chefs in our class! The food was delicious!

Leonardo da Vinci

Today we are going to be looking at the work of Leonardo da Vinci.

We will be using a website to explore his life and his work. This website is:

Have fun,

The finished (just about) banners

The banners are now almost finished - they just need the cane put on them so they can be held up. The are flying proudly in our classroom.

Here they are:

Banner update

We spent this afternoon working on our banners. The stencils had dried and we were able to use fabric pens to add details to the outline (negative) stencils.

Some of us were able to do some positive stencilling on to some really large banners.

By the end of the afternoon, we had finished the group banners but the large banners need a bit more work. We all went home exhausted but proud of our work and what we had learnt.

Banner Making

We have been extremely lucky in Scarlet Macaw base to have a real artist visit to work with us. Denise Poot has come today to teach us a little about Rome using Art.

We started off by looking at different buildings in Rome and in particular fountains. Then using our sketch books, we made sketches of fountains using oil pastels. We then used a water based paint to sweep over the top. The oil in the pastel resisted the paint form sticking where it was applied and the vibrant pictures showed through.

After play we learnt how to stencil, using fabric paints, onto banners. Here are some photos of what we have achieved so far:

The Italian Flag

We have been looking at the Italian flag. We talked about the colours of the flag and what we thought they meant.

We then found out that there are 2 meanings for the colours of the flag.

The first is:

Green for the Italian landscape
White for the snow on the Alps
Red for the blood of the Italian people in the battles for independence.

The second is:
Green for faith
White for hope
Red for charity.

We then made our own flag showing the meanings by drawing pictures to represent the colours and writing the words in pasta!

WORLD TEAM

We have started to learn about Italy through our literacy work. We read the book by Tim Vyner called World Team. It tells us about children all over the world sharing a love of football at exactly the same time and of their dream for World Cup glory.

We studied the features of the text and then created our own 2 page spread for Italy which had to include all these features. We included the time in Italy, Italian names, Italian places, the Italian landscape, the Italian flag and the ambitions of the children.

We then made a display of our work:
