The Dental Nurse Visits

On Tuesday 24th November, we were lucky enough to have the dental nurse visit our class as part of our topic work on Teeth and Eating.

She showed us a powerpoint presentation about the dangers to our teeth of eating too many sugary foods. We found out how many teaspoons of sugar you would find in certain foods and snacks that we might like. For example,

Mini Cheddars = 5 teaspoons of sugar per bag
Ribena = 90  teaspoons of sugar in a bottle or 9 in a serving
Mars Bar = 11 teaspoons
Pure orange juice = 8 teaspoons
Polos = 5 teaspoons

She told us that it is best to eat sugary foods as part of a whole meal rather than as snacks inbetween.

She also showed us the best way to clean our teeth.

We enjoyed her visit very much!

Going Green!

On Espresso there is a quiz to find out how green you are. We have all completed this quiz and have been given a score and a list of targets that will help us be more environmentally friendly. In our classroom we are making a display in our classroom showing the results and the targets we need to reach to be more eco-friendly.

Most of us have a good score already but we could always do a bit better!!!!

Calligrams

In literacy we are learning about calligrams and shape poems. We have found a very exciting website that shows animals in a zoo as calligrams. Why not take a look?

http://bemboszoo.com

We discussed with our talking partners which calligram we liked best and which one we thought was the cleverest. We had to look at the way the letters had been formed and any punctuation that had been used to create the shapes of the animals. We even tried drawing the calligram ourselves.

We loved it!!!

Quadrilaterals

This week we have learnt a new special word in maths - quadrilateral. Do you know what it means? If not ask someone in Scarlet Macaw Base and they will tell you!!!!

Cheese Plant sketches

This afternoon we were very lucky to have Mr Bannister bring in some cheese plant leaves and fruit. We found out all about the fruit and then decided that we would like to sketch the leaves and plants. We made careful observations of the shape, texture and colour of the objects.

One of the leaves to sketch

Sketching one of the fruit - once this has rotted it tastes like vanilla ice cream!

Mini Rainforests

For Homelearning this week we made our own mini rainforests. We had to
  • Find a see through container
  • Part fill it with gravel and soil
  • Add some plants - trying to make them look similar to the plants you might find in the rainforest
  • Add some toy animals
  • Water it
  • Cover the top tightly with cling film
  • Label the layers of the rainforest
  • Watch what happens....
There was great excitement when the rainforests arrived at school and WOW I can see why!!!!

They are great!  Everyone has taken great care and really tried to make them as authentic as possible. Judge for yourself; here are some photos for you to look at and we have a fantastic display of them in our classroom for all to see!

Where would you find the Rainforest?

The Tropical Rainforests can be found in countries close to the equator where it is very hot. They are found in countries in the Tropics which lie between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer.

You can see the location of the Rainforests on this map.

Rainforests are found in: South America, West Africa, Australia, Southern India and Southeast Asia.

Well, we have been extremely busy finding out about the Rainforest. At the beginning of the term we all brainstormed some questions that we would like to ask about the Rainforest. we then looked at which questions were the most popular and that's what we will be leaning about!

Our questions are:
Where would you find the rainforest?
What animals and plants would you find in the Rainforest?
What is the weather like in the Rainforest?
What soounds would you hear in the Rainforest?
What does the Rainforest give us?
Why are the Rainforests in danger?

As you can see, we are going to be very busy finding out all sorts of interesting information!

Make sure you come back and see what we have found out or have a look at the ever-growing display in our classroom.

Our first ever week as Scarlet Macaw Base!

Wow! What a fantastic first week we've had in Scarlet Macaw Base. Already, we've started our topic on 'Rainforests' where we have brainstormed what we would like to find out about this subject. We've also been talking about our rights and responsibilties in school and have decided on the most important 6 for our class. These rights and responsibilties form our class charter which have been agreed by all the children in the class. The children understand that we have a joint responsibilty to adhere to the charter, thus making our classroom a happy and safe environment to learn in. Please feel free to come and have a look at our class charter which can be found near the book corner.

Here is a list of the rights and responsibilities that the class came up with yesterday.

We have the right to a safe classroom
We have the responsibility to behave safely.

We have the right to voice our opinions.
We have the responsibility to listen to and respect the opinions of others.

We have the right to use schoolbooks, materials and equipment.
We have the responsibility to take care of all school materials.
We also have a responsibility to help protect our environment by preserving all the things in our classroom. For example, turning off lights and computers, recycling paper…etc.

We have a right to learn in this classroom.
We have the responsibility to listen to the teacher and learn new things without distractions from others.
We have the responsibility to try our best!

We have the right to kindness and respect from others.
We have the responsibility to be kind and respectful to others.

We have the right to make mistakes.
We have the responsibility to learn from our mistakes.
